Local and regional transportation - Transport Minister: No plans to cancel train journeys

In Lower Saxony, traffic minister Olaf Lies has announced no cancellations of train journeys in local and regional transport are planned. "That's not the plan. We are not planning to cancel any journeys, quite the opposite", Lies told the German Press Agency in Hannover.

Recently, the Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft presented a concept in which more offers could be created, emphasized the minister. By 2040, passenger numbers in the state are to be doubled. This is to be achieved through denser schedules and additional connections.

However, the Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft (LNVG) is reportedly examining whether fewer train journeys can be offered from the end of 2025. The reason, according to the LNVG spokeswoman, is a tight financial situation. "Which journeys could potentially be affected is to be clarified by autumn", the spokeswoman said a few days ago. The exact savings have not yet been determined. The spokeswoman emphasized that no cancellations are planned for the 2025 timetable year. However, as in previous years, there are no major additional orders.

Apart from the shortage of skilled workers, rising energy and personnel costs are causing problems for some railway companies in the state. The Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft is responsible for transport planning and the conceptualization of train schedules in Lower Saxon Schienenpersonennahverkehr (SPNV) and concludes contracts with railway companies.
