- Transforming the Opera Square in Munich for more greenery
Max-Joseph-Plaza, in front of Munich's National Theatre, is currently under construction. In place of the present barren expanse of stone and tarmac, anticipate lush lawns, strolling zones, shade-providing flora, and various seating areas coming up soon, all centrally located before the Bavarian State Opera. As per the city council's finalized plan from late April, serving as a temporary solution leading up to the entire square's refurbishment in a few years, Max-Joseph-Plaza is intended to be an inviting escape for all residents of Munich to unwind and rejuvenate in the city center.
The Construction Department draws inspiration from historical blueprints originating from Leo von Klenze's surroundings, who initiated the square's design at the beginning of the 19th century. Due to the passage of time, however, the area in front of the classical theatre building and Munich Residenz transformed into a stone-cold, tarmac-laden waste-land, employed primarily as a parking entrance to the underground garage—directly beneath the grand opera house's staircase. The provisional plan considers keeping the garage's entrance as narrow as feasible.
The construction is projected to wrap up in December 2025. The city council has allocated a budget cap of 3.9 million euros.
The conversion of Max-Joseph-Plaza will incorporate elements reminiscent of its Bavarian heritage, drawing inspiration from Leo von Klenze's original designs. The refurbished plaza, nestled right before the Bavarian State Opera in Bavaria, will offer a tranquil oasis for locals and tourists alike.
