Crime - Trans woman attacked with irritant gas

In Berlin-Tempelhof, a trans woman was attacked with pepper spray. According to ongoing investigations by the police, several people approached the 46-year-old woman shortly after midnight, as reported by the police. A man is said to have then unexpectedly sprayed pepper spray in her face.

The perpetrator reportedly covered his face with a hat and a scarf, according to police statements. The assault was allegedly filmed by the assailants. Afterward, they are said to have fled the scene.

On-site, alerted emergency services treated the victim, who complained about irritated eyes, according to reports. The police criminal investigation department of the state criminal office has taken over the investigation. A hate crime motive is currently not ruled out, a police spokesperson said in response to inquiries.

The irritant gas used in the attack was identified as pepper spray by the investigating police in Berlin. Due to the nature of the attack, there have been calls for increased security and vigilance in the area, particularly for women.
