Weather - Train and flight cancellations in the north due to snowfall in the south

The heavy snowfall in southern Germany and the associated suspension of flight operations at Munich Airport until Sunday morning also had an impact on traffic in the north at the weekend. As Hamburg Airport reported on its website, eight flights from Munich and nine flights to Munich were canceled from 6 a.m. on Saturday. Numerous flights to and from Munich were also canceled on Sunday.

However, some planes were due to take off, according to Hamburg Airport's departure and arrival information. Several flights between the Bavarian capital and Hamburg had already been canceled on Friday evening due to the weather.

Heavy snowfall and icy conditions had caused major traffic disruptions since Saturday night, particularly in southern Germany. On Saturday morning, flight operations at Munich Airport were temporarily suspended completely. This affected take-offs and landings at other airports.

On Sunday morning, flight operations at Munich Airport resumed after around 24 hours. Nevertheless, there were still restrictions here on Sunday: According to a spokesperson, around 560 of around 880 planned flights were canceled. Passengers were asked to check the status of their flight before departure.

The weather in southern Germany has also had an impact on rail traffic as far north as Germany. Travelers had to expect massive restrictions until Monday. Munich Central Station was temporarily closed. Connections from Hamburg or Kiel to Munich, for example, were also partially or completely canceled. Deutsche Bahn also asked passengers to check their trains before traveling.
