Traffic administration plans more parking bans for e-scooters
When it comes to controlling e-scooter traffic in Berlin's city center, the state government is not just focusing on fewer vehicles. Further regulatory measures are planned, said Transport Senator Manja Schreiner at a meeting of the House of Representatives on Thursday. E-scooters on footpaths and cycle paths had become a nuisance and it was necessary to create more order. This includes reducing the number of e-scooters in the city center from around 25,000 to 19,000. In addition, the CDU politician said that the no-parking zones should be extended, especially in the area of senior citizens' and care facilities.
A mandatory foot patrol is also planned. A corresponding pilot project had proved successful, said Schreiner. Now all providers are to be obliged to assign one full-time employee per 1,000 vehicles in the city to keep an eye on the streets.
A so-called dashboard was also set up in October. All providers enter their data there, said Schreiner. This allows the Senate Administration to take a closer look at how e-scooters move through the city and draw further conclusions.
Last Thursday, the transport administration announced that the number of e-scooters in the city center would initially be reduced accordingly from January 2024 to March 2025.
The proposed regulations for e-scooter traffic in Berlin also involve the House of Representatives, as Manja Schreiner, the Transport Senator, presented these plans at a meeting there. Additionally, the Senate is considering expanding no-parking zones, particularly around senior citizen and care facilities, to address concerns from Consumers.
