Housing policy - Trade unions want additional billions for housing construction

Several trade unions are calling on the green-black state government to provide additional funding of one billion euros per year for the construction of affordable housing. An active housing policy would have a positive effect on the construction industry and secure jobs, explained the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), IG BAU and IG Metall on Thursday in Stuttgart.

DGB Vice President Maren Diebel-Ebers said that the housing shortage had reached the heart of our society with full force. "Housing construction in Baden-Württemberg has collapsed massively." She once again called for the creation of a state-owned housing association. It could support local authorities with construction projects that are geared towards the common good and build up its own housing stock in the long term.

The regional head of IG BAU, Andreas Harnack, said that we were witnessing a sometimes scandalous withdrawal of private and public investors in housing construction, which was causing further turbulence in the construction industry. He said that it was crucial to put more money in hand and to promote housing and neighborhood construction more consistently. And the General Works Council Chairman of construction machinery manufacturer Liebherr, Rolf Ebe, explained that the slump in residential construction orders had reached companies dependent on the construction industry. "As a manufacturer of construction machinery and household appliances, Liebherr is also affected by the downturn."
