Trade unions extend warning strikes at universities
The trade unions Verdi and GEW are extending their warning strikes at Thuringian universities. The unions announced that employees at Friedrich Schiller University and Ernst Abbe University in Jena, Studierendenwerk Thüringen in Jena, the University of Erfurt and Erfurt University of Applied Sciences have been called to strike on Monday. According to Verdi, 500 people are expected to take part in a demonstration in Jena.
The warning strikes coincide with a Germany-wide day of action at universities, in which universities in more than 50 cities are taking part. They are demanding significant pay rises for employees and a collective agreement for student assistants. They have been called to strike throughout the week, according to Verdi. Courses may be canceled at the universities affected. There will also be restrictions on the operation of cafeterias and libraries.
The strikes extended by trade unions Verdi and GEW impact both Friedrich Schiller University and Ernst Abbe University in Jena, as well as universities in Erfurt and their applied sciences counterpart. These universities are participating in a nationwide day of action, where strikes are being held at over 50 universities across Germany.
