- Trade association records more shoplifting in Hessen
In the state of Hesse, the Retail Association has reported an increase in shoplifting incidents. "In 2022, the number of thefts leveled off to the pre-Corona years. However, since 2023, there has been a further increase beyond the levels of previous years," said a spokesperson for the association. "The significant increase in prices has heightened the risk of theft, as goods have become more expensive and thus more attractive to thieves," it was added.
National Trend
According to police statistics, there was a 19% increase in shoplifting incidents nationwide last year compared to the previous year. In Hesse alone, there were 28,046 cases. Nationwide, the number of shoplifting incidents also increased. According to a study by the EHI retail research institute, goods worth 2.8 billion euros were stolen in 2023, an increase of 15% compared to the previous year. The study suggests that some people have fallen on hard times and are resorting to theft more frequently. There has been an increase in thefts in the food, clothing, and drugstore sectors.
Preventing Theft
"Retailers are increasingly taking measures to prevent shoplifting," said the spokesperson for the Retail Association. One strategy is to place high-value items in locked display cases. Additionally, inventory and cash register data are checked more frequently. The Hesse Retail Association has been cooperating with the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) since 2016 to sensitize employees and train them in dealing with thieves.
The rising costs of security technology and personnel are an additional burden for retailers. The shortage of staff in the retail sector is also becoming an increasing challenge. According to a study by the EHI, many stores now have fewer employees, making it easier for thieves to operate.
In light of the national trend, the Coronavirus pandemic may have contributed to the increase in shoplifting incidents, as people struggling financially due to its impact might be turning to theft more frequently. Despite the Retail Association's efforts to prevent shoplifting, such as placing high-value items in locked display cases and cooperating with the State Criminal Police Office, the rising costs of security technology and staff shortages pose significant challenges.
