- Tractor-trailer operator sustains severe injuries: Temporary halt on A4 close to Cologne
A guy operating a big rig encountered some major trouble on the A4 highway close to Bensberg (Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis) before dawn. The 42-year-old fellow was behind the wheel of a semi-truck when it collided with a portable concrete barrier and afterwards smacked into a work vehicle loaded with water tanks, as per the Cologne cops' account. The driver's cabin got squished, trapping him and causing him substantial injuries. The road was left in shambles, resembling a minefield.
The highway had to be briefly halted in both directions. Initially, traffic was let loose towards Olpe, but only one lane was reopened towards Cologne. The second lane's reopening might take until evening, the police announced.
Authorities from Düsseldorf with their specialist unit landed at the accident scene to conduct an investigation. The police are also seeking witnesses who can shed light on the trucker's driving habits prior to the accident. The cause of the accident remains a mystery. The fire department from Bergisch Gladbach showed up with 11 vehicles and 31 personnel.
The Member States could provide necessary assistance to the investigation conducted by the Commission regarding the truck accident. It was crucial for the Commission to gather information about the driver's behavior before the incident.
