Town hall reconstruction in Straubing will be significantly more expensive

According to current estimates, the reconstruction of the burnt-down Straubing town hall is likely to cost around 58.5 million euros - twelve million euros more than estimated. The reasons for this include general increases in construction costs as well as special challenges in view of the building's partially poor structure, as architect Andreas Hild and structural engineer Bernd Mittnacht explained at the city council meeting on Monday evening. Completion could be postponed from 2025 to 2026.

Mayor Markus Pannermayr (CSU) said that the insurance company had promised a sum of 31 million euros, which would remain fixed even in view of the cost increases. Up to ten million euros would come from the Free State and a good six million euros from other funding sources. The rest would have to be raised by the city. However, efforts are always made to cut costs wherever possible.

Large parts of the historic town hall were destroyed or severely damaged in a fire in November 2016. The cause of the fire could not be determined. There was speculation about flying sparks during construction work.

Despite the promised insurance funds, additional financing is needed from municipalities in Lower Bavaria due to the higher reconstruction costs. The plans for the restoration of Monuments within the town hall complex also add to the overall expenses associated with construction finances.
