Statistics - Tourism industry in the southwest shakes off the effects of coronavirus

The tourism industry in the southwest has largely overcome the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. This is supported by preliminary figures from the State Statistical Office. In the 2023 summer season, tourism businesses in the state recorded 14.0 million arrivals and 35.2 million overnight stays. This is the highest result ever achieved, as the statisticians announced on Thursday. The summer season always lasts from May to October.

Compared to the 2022 summer season, which was already characterized by the recovery after the pandemic, this is 6.4 percent more arrivals and 4.4 percent more overnight stays. And the pre-corona figures from 2019 - the highest figures to date - were also exceeded: arrivals were up by 0.2% and overnight stays by 1.8%.

According to the figures, the strongest months for tourism were the summer months of July and August with a combined total of 12.9 million overnight stays. In contrast, the highest increases were recorded in May and September. The increase in overnight stays was primarily due to growth among domestic tourists, it said.

In total, around 10.7 million or 76.5 percent of guests came from Germany in the summer. In addition, there were almost 3.3 million foreign guests. The statistics also show this: In terms of overnight stays, the proportion of bookings from abroad did increase slightly again. However, at 21.0 percent, it was still below the pre-corona figure (22.3 percent).

With 1.7 million overnight stays, Switzerland was once again the top destination for tourists from abroad. An increase of 5.8% compared to 2022, followed by the Netherlands and France.

According to State Secretary for Tourism Patrick Rapp, the record figures show that tourism in Baden-Württemberg has found new strength despite multiple crises. He said that the figures allowed the industry to breathe a sigh of relief. All regions had improved compared to the previous year, with seven out of nine reaching new record levels. However, urban areas in particular, such as the Stuttgart region and the north of the state, were still feeling the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
