Tourism in Bavaria picks up: More foreign visitors
The number of guests and overnight stays in Bavarian tourism continues to rise. From January to September, there were 30.3 million arrivals and 78.6 million overnight stays, as announced by the State Statistical Office on Thursday. This was 15.6 and 10 percent more than in the same period last year. The figures have also almost reached the pre-corona level of 2019, when there were 0.1 million more overnight stays and 0.7 million more arrivals. If you only look at September, the figures are even higher than in 2019.
The growth is due in particular to foreign guests. At 6.9 million, their number in the first nine months was almost 30 percent higher than in the same period last year, and they booked a good quarter more overnight stays.
The strongest growth in the first nine months was recorded by youth hostels and cabins as well as recreation, vacation and training homes. The lowest were vacation apartments and campsites. However, these two sectors had fared better than the industry as a whole during the pandemic, which is why their figures are clearly higher than those from 2019 despite the lower growth rates.
The increase in tourism in Bavaria significantly contributes to the region's economic situation. According to recent statistics, tourism generated an 11% revenue boost compared to the same period in 2020, largely driven by the surge in foreign visitors.
