Severe weather effects - Torrential rain in Grimmen: Fire department constantly responding

Incessant heavy rainfall in Grimmen, Vorpommern-Rügen district, resulted in a hectic night for the local fire department. Starting at 8 pm on Monday, they received well over 100 emergency calls. Olaf Clasen, the head of the volunteer fire department, commented on Tuesday, "The whole town was submerged under water. Water was gushing out from every individual storm drain."

Over 150 people from various neighboring fire departments and disaster control crews collaborated to clear out flooded houses and make waterlogged streets drivable again. A tragic incident had the roof of a supermarket collapsing. Efforts continued well into the morning. It was determined that up to 115 liters of rain fell per square meter. As yet, the extent of the damage remains undetermined.

Meanwhile, the fire department in Schwerin likewise responded to a substantial number of weather-related alarms during the night. The regional control center's spokesperson reported Tuesday morning that they had been summoned to 21 separate instances. The majority of the interventions related to flooded streets or saturated basements.
