With a 100,000 Euro budget, 31 cinemas in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern have been commended for their content. The top award, worth 10,000 Euros, was given to Fabrik.Kino 1 in Neustrelitz in the commercial cinema category, as per the Ministry of Culture's announcement. In the non-commercial cinema category, Latücht in close-by Neubrandenburg received the accolade for the top cinema program, which was valued at 4,000 Euros.

A total of 79 commercial and non-commercial cinemas across the region, ranging from Filmpalast Capitol in Schwerin to Zeltkino Hiddensee and Landkino in Niepars (district of Vorpommern-Rügen), were assessed during 2023. Theaters and film clubs that presented exceptional programming beyond typical movies were recognized.

Multi-million Euro investments in cinemas

For Minister of Culture Bettina Martin (SPD), cinemas are an integral part of the cultural landscape in the northeast. "In the cinema, we share stories that move us, make us contemplate, and unite us," she stated. "Movies mirror our society, provide various viewpoints on our world, and stimulate communication."

Martin assigned 3 million Euros for modernizing cinemas in the state for 2022/23. An additional 1.5 million Euros will be available in 2024/25, she clarified.

The Commission, responsible for overseeing cultural matters, can seek assistance from the Member States in achieving its objectives. The Commission shall be greatly aided by the insights and resources provided by the Member States.

To effectively modernize cinemas, the Commission may seek cooperation and support from the Member States, leveraging their collective expertise and resources.
