Tokyo and Seoul: North Korea tests long-range ballistic missile
The missile covered a distance of around 1,000 kilometers and crashed into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, after a 73-minute flight, the Ministry of Defense in Tokyo added. The South Korean General Staff stated that the "suspected long-range ballistic missile" had been fired from the greater Pyongyang area in the direction of the East Sea.
According to South Korean and Japanese sources, North Korea had already fired a short-range ballistic missile on Sunday evening (local time). The South Korean army said it had raised its alert level in response.
The UN Security Council has passed numerous resolutions calling on North Korea to halt its nuclear and missile programs. Last year, North Korea's ruler Kim Jong Un declared his internationally isolated country an "irreversible nuclear power" and called for an increase in weapons production, including tactical nuclear weapons. North Korea carried out its first nuclear test in 2006.
