How to play Wordle

Wordle can be found here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle becomes available every day at midnight, your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The letters of the word will turn green if they’re correct and in the right position, yellow if they’re correct but in the wrong place, or gray if they’re not in the day's secret word at all. For further guidance, check out our Wordle guide here, and my strategy guide here for more advanced tips. (Additional information is available after the hints and answers in this post.)

Ready for the hints? Let's dive in!

Does today’s Wordle have any unusual letters?

We consider common letters those that appear in the old typesetters’ phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Remember this! Pronounce it “Edwin Shirdloo,” like a name, and imagine him as your acquaintance.)

Today, there are three common letters based on our mnemonic. One is frequently used, while another is less common.

How I solved today’s Wordle

I began with RAISE and TOUCH, followed by BLOND. This left CROWN as the best solution.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Yesterday’s Wordle was medium difficult. The hint was “to support a plant or an interest; as a noun, it means a share or portion” and the solution contained four common letters and one somewhat common letter.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer was STAKE.

A basic primer on Wordle

The purpose of Wordle is to guess the day's secret word. When you open the game, you'll see an empty grid of letters. It's up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.

Now, you can use the colors that appear to gain clues about the word: Green means you've correctly guessed a letter and its position, (for example, if you guess PARTY and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green).

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. (If you guess PARTY but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A, and T will be yellow).
  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guess PARTY and everything is gray, then the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST).

With this in mind, make another guess, then another, in an attempt to find the correct word before running out of chances. You receive six guesses, and then it's game over.

The best starting words for Wordle

What should you bet on for your first guess? The most effective starters usually have common letters to increase the chances of obtaining yellow and green squares, which will guide your guessing. If you encounter all grays when guessing common letters, this is still valuable information to help eliminate possibilities. The New York Times' Wordle analysis bot suggests starting with one of these:

  • CRANE
  • TRACE
  • SLANT
  • CRATE
  • CARTE

MIT's analysis indicates that you'll eliminate the most options in the first round by beginning with one of these:

  • SALET
  • REAST
  • TRACE
  • CRATE
  • SLATE

Other good options include ARISE, ROUND, and ADIEU. Words like AUDIO give you more vowels in play, but you could argue that it's better to begin with a focus on consonants. Choose your strategy and start playing!

Another strategy tip: Originally, Wordle utilized a list of approximately 2,300 word solutions, but after its acquisition by the NYT, it now incorporates an editor who manually selects the solutions. Occasionally, these choices may be somewhat challenging words that wouldn't have made the initial list, or they might be topical, like FEAST during Thanksgiving. Remember, there might be a specific theme.

Other Wordle Options

If you're yearning for more five-letter guessing games and derivatives, here are the top Wordle alternatives, sorted by difficulty:

  • Wheeldle, which allows you to tackle multiple puzzles sequentially
  • Dordle and Quordle, in which you need to solve two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles simultaneously, with the same guesses. There's also Octordle, with eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with sixteen
  • Waffle, which displays numerous five-letter words mixed up in a grid. You win by reorganizing the letters to solve each word
  • Absurdle, where the solution shifts after each guess, but the feedback must be maintained consistently. You must strategically manipulate it so only one potential word is left; then, you guess and triumph
  • Squabble, in which you compete in Wordle against other individuals with a timer ticking. If you linger too long between guesses, you incur harm; the final player left is the victor
  • Antiwordle, where your goal is not to guess the daily solution. Instead, you must deliberately reuse any correct letters, making it harder for you and facile for the game, resulting in better performance as time passes.

To discover more Wordle alternatives, explore websites that offer games similar to Wordle, such as Wheeldle, Dordle, Quordle, Octordle, Sedecordle, Waffle, Absurdle, and Squabble. These variations may challenge you with multiple puzzles simultaneously, altering words after each guess, or requiring you to compete against other players.

Wordle analysis bots suggest starting with words like CRANE, TRACE, SLANT, CRATE, and CARTE for a higher chance of obtaining yellow and green squares, helping you to decipher the answer more efficiently.
