How to play Wordle

Wordle can be found here on the New York Times website. A new puzzle becomes available every day at midnight, in your local time.

Start by guessing a five-letter word. The word's letters will turn green if they're accurate, yellow if you have the right letter in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn't in the day's secret word at all. To learn more, see our guide to playing Wordle here, and our more advanced tips here.

Prepared for the hints? Let's proceed!

Does today’s Wordle have any unusual letters?

We consider common letters as those appearing in the old typesetters' phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. Memorize this! Pronounce it "Edwin Shirdloo," like a name, and imagine he's a friend of yours.

Today, three letters come from our mnemonic, while the other two are less common.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer

Yesterday's Wordle was challenging. The hint was "as a verb, something you can (but hope you don't) do in school," and the answer contained three common letters and two less common letters.

The answer to yesterday's Wordle was FLUNK.

A primer on Wordle basics

The goal of Wordle is to guess the day's secret word. When you open the Wordle game, you'll see an empty grid of letters. It's up to you to make the first move: type in any five-letter word.

Now, use the colors that appear to get clues about the word. Green means you correctly guessed a letter, and it's in the correct position. (For example, if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word, but not in the position you guessed it. (For example, if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A, and T will all be yellow.)
  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all. (If you guessed PARTY, and everything is gray, then the solution cannot be PURSE or ROAST.)

Use this information to guess another word, then another, aiming to reach the correct word before you run out of chances. You get six guesses, and then it's game over.

The best starter words for Wordle

What should you play for that first guess? The best starters tend to include common letters, increasing the chances of getting yellow and green squares to guide your guessing. (Even if you get all grays when guessing common letters, that's still valuable information to help eliminate possibilities.) Words like CRANE, TRACE, SLANT, and CRATE make good starting choices. Other good picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO have more vowels in play, but it's often better to start with an emphasis on consonants, using words like RENTS or CLAMP. Choose your strategy, and see how it plays out.

How to win at Wordle

We have several Wordle strategy guides that might interest you if you're a serious player. This guide covers using consonants to your advantage, while this guide focuses on a strategy that uses the most common letters. In this advanced guide, we cover a three-pronged approach for capturing hints while maximizing your chances of winning quickly.

The biggest difference between Wordle winners and losers is that winners use their guesses to gather information about what letters are in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don't waste guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

Another strategy tip: Originally, Wordle used around 2,300 solution words, but following its acquisition by the NYT, it now has an editor who personally selects the solutions. Occasionally, these choices are somewhat complex words that wouldn't have qualified for the original list, and other times they're current or event-related. For instance, FEAST was the answer one Thanksgiving. Bear in mind that there might be a theme at play.

Wordle Alternatives, Ranked by Difficulty

If you're craving more five-letter conundrums, the top Wordle alternatives include:

  • Wheeldle, allowing you to play multiple puzzles in a row
  • Dordle and Quordle, challenges that require you to solve two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles simultaneously, using the same guesses. There's also Octordle, with eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with 16
  • Waffle, which presents several five-letter words, scrambled in a grid. The objective is to rearrange the letters until you solve the puzzle
  • Absurdle, which alters the solution after each guess, but must maintain consistency with its previous feedback. Your goal is to corner this chameleon and leave no alternative but the correct answer
  • Squabble, a game in which you compete against other players in Wordle, with a timer ticking away. You'll take damage if you take too long between guesses, and the last one standing wins
  • Antiwordle, in which you aim to avoid guessing the day’s solution. If you mistakenly guess correctly, you're required to reuse those letters, making it more challenging as time passes

If you're in need of assistance with today's 'Wordle' answer, you've come to the right place. Besides providing the solution, we offer various strategies and hints to help you improve your Wordle skills. Speaking of which, 'Wordle' can be found on the New York Times website, offering a new challenge daily at midnight in your local time.

When it comes to guessing the five-letter word, the basic strategy involves understanding the color feedback. Green means the letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow indicates the letter is correct but in the wrong spot, and gray signifies the letter is not in the day's secret word at all.
