How I solved today's Connections
COAT, FILM, LAYER, and VELVET are all words referring to an outer layer. 🟩 I initially thought to combine FILM with DEVELOP and PICTURE, but there were no other photography terms that suited.
IMAGINE, PICTURE, CONSIDER, and ENVISION are all words related to conceptualizing or planning. 🟨
FICK, BRUSH, SWEEP, and WIPE are all motions—maybe smartphone gestures? Painting techniques? 🟦 Oh, NYT says they're words for removing crumbs.
This leaves CREATE, PROGRAM, HACK, and DEVELOP, which are all connected to generating software or programs. 🟪
How to play Connections
I have a comprehensive guide on playing Connections, but here's a brief reminder of the rules:
First, locate the Connections game either on the New York Times website or in their Games app (formerly the Crossword app). You'll see a game board with 16 tiles, each with one word or expression. Your duty is to pick a group of four tiles that have something in common. Often they are all the same sort of thing (for example: RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all forms of precipitation) but sometimes there is wordplay involved (for instance, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are all different types of lists: bucket list, guest list, and so on).
Pick four items and tap the Submit button. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be shown. (Yellow is the easiest, followed by green, then blue, then purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you'll have an opportunity to try again.
You win when you've properly identified all four groups. However, if you make 4 mistakes before you complete the game, it ends and the answers are displayed.
To win Connections, the key is understanding that the groupings are intentionally deceptive. You'll likely encounter overlapping categories. For instance, one riddle featured six breakfast items: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON belongs to a category of painters that also includes CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG is in a group of things that come in dozens, along with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH. Double-check your selections before pressing "submit" to ensure they include just those four items.
When struggling, a different approach is to focus on words that appear disconnected from others. If you only associate WHISTLER with the famous painting "Whistler's Mother," you may be on the right track. While solving that riddle, I had to search online to see if there was a painter named Close, as it didn't seem to fit any of the usual themes.
If you're still feeling stumped, take advantage of our daily hints. Feel free to check back tomorrow for the next challenge!

Today, you might find the answer to the Connections game in the Entertainment section of the New York Times. Considering the yellow category's theme of 'Dream Up,' you might need to envision how today's entertainment connects with the words 'film,' 'develop,' and 'picture.' Additionally, remember that the purple category, 'Verbs of a Software Engineer,' may also have relevance to today's entertainment connections.
