How I solved today’s Connections

FORE and SPARE make me think of golf and bowling, but then I realize that TOO and FORE are both homophones for numbers (two and four). WON is also a homophone (one), but I can't find a fourth homophone that fits! That's frustrating.

TOO, EXTRA, OVER, and BEYOND are all words referring to additional quantities of something. Let's test that hypothesis. 🟩

YEN and POUND are both types of currency, but I can't find others.

EXCUSE and PARDON are both words for politely asking for permission or favor—I see, but they could also mean granting forgiveness. That would fit with SPARE and SAVE as well. 🟨

After a quick Google search, I found out that REAL and WON are also types of currency (in Brazil and Korea, respectively). 🟦

That leaves ARROW, KNUCKLE, FORE, and BLOCK. Hmm. FOREground and KNUCKLE sandwich—I can't find any good fill-in-the-blank words yet. Let's investigate further. 🟪 Oh, it's A BODY PART RELATED TO HUNGER/DEHYDRATION. Fine!

How to play Connections

I've written a full guide to Connections, but here's a quick summary of the rules:

First, find the Connections game on the New York Times website or in their Games app (formerly the Crossword app). You'll find a game board with 16 tiles, each containing one word or phrase. Your goal is to select a group of four tiles that share something in common. Often they are all the same type of thing (for example, RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of wet weather), but sometimes there's some wordplay involved (for example, BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH are all types of lists: bucket list, guest list, and so on).

Select four items and press the "Submit" button. If you've guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is the easiest, followed by green, then blue, then purple.) If your guess was incorrect, you'll have another chance to try again.

You win when you've correctly identified all four groups. However, if you make four mistakes before finishing, the game ends, and the answers are revealed.
