How I deciphered today's Strands puzzle

After noticing the puzzle theme, my initial thought is to search for words like "saint" or "volunteer," but I haven't found anything relevant yet. In the lower left corner, I spot the word JUSTICE. 🔵 OK, so maybe I'm searching for names associated with virtues? Aha, that's the spangram, which I notice running from left to right: VIRTUENAMES. 🟡

Tips on playing Strands

Check out Strands on the New York Times website. Strands is new and still in beta, so it's not yet available in the NYT Games app.

When you start playing, you'll encounter a game board with an assortment of letters, accompanied by a clue indicating the puzzle's theme—for example, "Better with age." Your assignment is to find the hidden words within the board that match the theme.

The most crucial word to find is the "spangram," a phrase that more explicitly specifies the puzzle's theme. (For example, the spangram for the "Better with age" puzzle is FERMENTED, which describes items that, you guessed it, improve with age.) When you uncover the spangram, it will be marked in yellow. Solving the spangram often makes the rest of the puzzle a breeze.

In Strands, words can move in any direction (up, down, left, right, or diagonally), and you can only use each letter once. There is only one correct solution. When you successfully discover one of the puzzle's words (for instance, KOMBUCHA, MISO, or KIMCHI), it will be highlighted in blue.

If you struggle with the puzzle, you can submit any non-theme words you come across (as long as they're four letters or more) to gain credit for a single hint. If you provide three non-theme words, the "Hint" button will become interactive; once clicked, one of the theme words' letters will be highlighted for you. You'll still need to connect these highlighted letters in the correct sequence to form a theme word. If you decide to request a hint for a word that already has a hint attached to it, that word's letter order will be shown.

Winning at Strands

Unlike Connections or Wordle, you can't lose Strands. When you submit guesses, you'll either correctly identify a word, earn credit toward a hint, or the board will shiver back and forth, indicating that the word you provided is excessively short or incorrect. You can't run out of guesses, and there is no time limit.

You win when you've properly utilized all the letters on the board, meaning that you've found the spangram and all the theme words. Similar to other NYT games, once you complete the puzzle, you'll see a sharable card showcasing your performance that day: blue dots 🔵 denote theme words you found, the yellow dot 🟡 denotes when you found the spangram, and a lightbulb 💡 indicates words for which you requested a hint.
