Spoilers for today's Connections puzzle

Yellow: "Yellow" Category - HOMOPHONES

  • The yellow grouping is considered the most straightforward. The theme for this day's yellow category is HOMOPHONES, and the words are: BI, BUY, BY, BYE.

Green: "Green" Category - MUSCLES, INFORMALLY

  • The green grouping is supposed to be the second-easiest. The theme for today's green category is MUSCLES, INFORMALLY and the words are: AB, PEC, QUAD, TRI.

Blue: "Blue" Category - MUSIC GENRES

  • The blue grouping is the second-hardest. The theme for today's blue category is MUSIC GENRES, and the words are: DUB, EMO, POP, TRAP.

Purple: "Purple" Category - SETTINGS ON AN APPLIANCE KNOB

  • The purple grouping is considered the hardest. The theme for this day's purple category is SETTINGS ON AN APPLIANCE KNOB, and the words are: HI, LO, MED, OFF.

To solve today's Connections, you should identify the common theme identified by the colors. TRI, TRAP, AB, QUAD, and PEC could all be shortened/slang names for muscles, so wait until you can eliminate one of them. BYE, BI, BUY, and BY are homophones:

  • TRI, TRAP, AB, and PEC belong to the muscle category.
  • DUB, EMO, POP, and TRAP are all music genres.

This leaves LO, MED, OFF, and HI, which are all abbreviations for heat or volume settings that you might see on button controls, for example.

How to play Connections

To play Connections, first, locate the game either on the New York Times website or in their Games app. You'll see a game board with 16 tiles, each with one word or phrase. Your goal is to select a group of four tiles that share a common theme or some form of connection. These connections can be based on meaning or wordplay. Once you've made your selection, hit "Submit." If your guess is correct, the category and color will be revealed. (Yellow is the easiest, followed by green, then blue, and purple.) If your answer is incorrect, you can try again.

Here's a quick guide on how to play Connections:

  1. Visit the New York Times Connections page: https://www.nytimes.com/games/connect.html
  2. Scroll down and select the most recent Connections puzzle. (It's usually at the top of the list.)
  3. Look at the board and find four tiles that share a common theme.
  4. Click or tap on the tiles to select them, then click or tap "Submit."
  5. If you guessed correctly, the category and color will be revealed.
  6. If your guess was incorrect, you can try again.

That's how to solve today's Connections puzzle. Good luck!

To successfully complete Connections, you need to correctly categorize all four groups. However, if you make four errors before completion, the game ends, and the solutions are exposed.

Triumphing in Connections

To win Connections, remember that the groups are deliberately difficult to decipher. You'll often encounter overlapping categories. For example, a riddle appeared to be about six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. Yet, it turned out that BACON was part of a painting-related group that included CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG belonged to a "12-related" group with JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH. Hence, never hit "submit" until your selected group exclusively comprises those four items.

If you're at a loss, consider concentrating on words that seemingly have no association with the others. For instance, if WHISTLER only evokes the image of "Whistler's Mother" painting to you, it might lead you to the correct answer. In my experience with that one, I found myself searching for a painter named Close since it didn't fit any evident themes.

Another effective tactic when stumped is to peruse some helpful recommendations like these compilations we share every day. Stay tuned for tomorrow's puzzle!
