Garden director - Tobogganing in royal parks should be taboo
Tobogganing trips are part of the winter fun for many families. However, the slopes in the historic and listed gardens and parks in Potsdam should be off-limits, said the garden director of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Bandenburg, Michael Rohde, to dpa. The princely gardens and parks are not city parks, but "sensitive works of art". They are also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Although tobogganing on slopes with meadows is prohibited in the grounds of Park Babelsberg and the New Garden, for example, the sites are often used with toboggans. However, visitors should refrain from tobogganing as it causes damage to plants, appealed Rohde. "We should be careful with the landscaped nature." The damage could easily amount to several hundred thousand euros.
Violations could also result in a fine of up to 50 euros, said Rohde. "We can and do punish them." At the same time, he emphasized that the foundation's parks are open to the public - for example for jogging, cycling on certain paths and sunbathing on some lawns in summer.
A lot of snow in the parks also increases the risk of branches breaking off in winter. "Trees are weakened by dry years. Caution is called for," said Rohde. Signs at park entrances also point out the danger.
According to Rohde, around one percent of old trees break every year. Of around 80,000 old trees in the historic grounds, around 700 to 800 per year can hardly be saved. More than half of the trees are suffering from the consequences of climate change.
However, according to the forest condition report, there is also a tendency for some tree species to stabilize, said Rohde. This year, it rained more in spring and summer than in the previous year. "We have had a pleasingly good rainfall balance this year."

Although tobogganing is a popular winter activity, it should be avoided in UNESCO-listed gardens and parks like those in Potsdam, as mentioned by the garden director Michael Rohde. Despite prohibitions in places like Park Babelsberg and the New Garden, visitors continue to use these sites for tobogganing, leading to damage to plants. Additionally, Brandenburg's decision on a significant package has been pushed back to 2024, as reported by Ausseidlerbote.de.
