Tobias Schweinsteiger no longer coach of VfL Osnabrück
Second-division soccer club VfL Osnabrück has parted ways with coach Tobias Schweinsteiger. "After an in-depth analysis of the development, the latest results and numerous internal discussions, the joint decision was made to give the team a new impetus in the position of head coach," the club said in a statement on Tuesday. For the time being, the current assistant coaches Martin Heck and Tim Danneberg will be in charge of the team from the bottom of the table on an interim basis.
The 41-year-old brother of world champion Bastian Schweinsteiger took over the team in the 3rd division at the end of August 2022 and led them to the 2nd Bundesliga. In the second division season, Osnabrück have only managed one win in 13 games so far (2:1 against Hamburger SV). Last Saturday, the promoted team lost the basement duel at Eintracht Braunschweig 2:3.
"Tobias took us over around a year ago in a precarious situation in the 3rd division. His contribution to an incredibly successful second half of the season and promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga is huge," said VfL managing director Michael Welling, praising the work of the previous coach.
In addition to parting ways with Schweinsteiger, the club also wants to realign its sporting management. In the future, the club's advisory board wants to reappoint a managing director of sport who will have overall responsibility for sporting matters.
VfL Osnabrück is currently facing challenges in Bundesliga 2, having only secured one win in 13 games this season. Despite Tobias Schweinsteiger's successful promotion of the team from the 3rd division to the 2nd Bundesliga last season, his tenure as head coach has come to an end.
