To Schweinsteiger's delight: Bayern end negative run
FC Bayern's basketball team took this visit from the world champions as a good omen. In front of former soccer world champion Bastian Schweinsteiger and national basketball coach Gordon Herbert, the Munich team ended its negative run in the Euroleague. The team of Head Coach Pablo Laso won 94:85 (53:51) against Partizan Belgrade on Wednesday. The German club had previously lost its last four games in the top flight. With a record of 3:5, Bayern have now caught up with the middle of the table.
"In terms of results, that's not what we were hoping for in the Bundesliga and the Euroleague," said Bayern's managing director Marko Pesic on Magentasport. He can now hope for a turnaround. "It's a process we have to go through, but it's very painful because we're hurting ourselves with the good work the team is doing. There's no other medicine than a win that can help our confidence."
Not only Schweinsteiger and Herbert in attendance as celebrities
Without the injured world champions Andreas Obst and Isaac Bonga, Munich initially had a few problems. The visitors from Serbia, who were supported by numerous fans in the arena, led by ten points at the start of the second quarter. Munich turned the game around thanks to an increasingly strong Carsen Edwards and was 53:51 ahead at the break. "It's good to win again after four defeats," said Bayern's professional player Sylvain Francisco.
In the fiercely contested final phase, Bayern did not let victory slip from its grasp in front of TikToker Younes Zarou. Edwards was Munich's best scorer with 21 points. "We've had a bit of a turnover problem in recent weeks. We also had a problem playing our game consistently. That's worked a bit better now," said world champion Niels Giffey. The Euroleague continues on Friday (7 p.m./Magentasport) at top Lithuanian club Zalgiris Kaunas.
Coach is satisfied
"We're coming off two tough weeks. We played better as a team, but the details cost us the games. Now we've controlled the rebounds in defense and didn't lose the ball. Those were the keys to victory," said Head Coach Pablo Laso. "I'm happy for the team, because they did a good job."
The victory against Partizan Belgrade in the Euroleague was a welcome change for FC Bayern's basketball team, who had been on a four-game losing streak. Former soccer world champion Bastian Schweinsteiger and national basketball coach Gordon Herbert were among the celebrity spectators in Munich.
After their win, Bayern's professional player Sylvain Francisco expressed his satisfaction, stating, "It's good to win again in the Euroleague after our struggles in Munich."
