Public transportation - Tina instead of Tatra: six new streetcars for Gera
They will provide space for wheelchair users and baby carriages and replace the Tatras, which are more than 40 years old: Six new streetcars are to transport passengers through Gera. The Gera transport and operating company (GVB) signed a contract to this effect with the manufacturer Stadler on Monday. According to GVB, the order is worth almost 38 million euros. Around 17.1 million euros will come from the state and will be co-financed by EU funds. Gera itself is contributing 7.2 million euros.
The first Tina streetcars are due to be delivered from 2026. The vehicles are barrier-free and equipped with air conditioning. They will replace some of the Tatra streetcars from the 1980s, which have a high entrance. The streetcars will also be lighter and more economical. The 43-metre-long streetcars can carry up to 270 passengers.
"Assuming we receive further funding, we intend to take up the option in 2025 so that we can then also replace the remaining Tatra vehicles, which are over 40 years old and not barrier-free," said GVB Managing Director Thorsten Rühle.
