Timetable changes due to bomb disposal
Due to two bomb detonations in Braunschweig, local and long-distance trains will have to be canceled or rerouted on Sunday. Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., there will be no trains to or from the west and south, as announced by Deutsche Bahn on Friday. Long-distance trains will be diverted. The stops in Hildesheim, Peine, Braunschweig and Helmstedt will be canceled.
According to Deutsche Bahn, there will be cancellations on regional services on regional train 44 between Braunschweig and Salzgitter-Lebenstedt, on regional train 45 between Braunschweig and Schöppenstedt and on regional train 46 between Braunschweig and Herzberg. The railroad is organizing replacement bus services on these routes.
According to the railroad company, Braunschweig main station itself will not be closed and train services on the east side will not be affected. The railroad asks travelers to inform themselves on the Internet and to pay attention to notices and announcements.
During exploratory work, there were indications of two unexploded bombs from the Second World War south of the Bürgerpark. In order to defuse the bombs, which are several meters deep in the ground, around 5000 residents in Braunschweig will have to leave their homes on Sunday. There will also be restrictions on bus and light rail services. The exclusion zone covers an area with a radius of one kilometer around the suspected points. It extends from Frankfurter Straße in the west to the main train station and from Viewegs Garten in the north to highway 39.
The emergency situation due to the discovery of unexploded bombs from the Second World War in Braunschweig could lead to significant consequences for railroad traffic. Trains to and from the west and south will be canceled or rerouted, and replacement bus services will be organized. Moreover, the consequences of war extend beyond the railroad system, as around 5000 residents will have to evacuate their homes due to the bomb disposal operations.
