Railroad - Timetable change: Additional connections on regional services

The timetable change is due next Sunday not only for long-distance services, but also for regional services. Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (Greens) said in Stuttgart on Wednesday that regional rail services will be expanded. "With over 100 million train kilometers, there are more trains on the road in Baden-Württemberg than ever before."

Below is an overview of the most important innovations:

- There are two additional train connections between Stuttgart and Nuremberg. At night, the last train from Nuremberg to Stuttgart departs at 22:38 - making it possible to visit theaters and concerts in Nuremberg and travel there and back by train. In the morning, the first train in the opposite direction leaves Stuttgart at 04:23 and arrives in Nuremberg at 07:17. - The Seehäsle now becomes the S 61, which serves the Radolfzell - Stockach - Mengen route. It will now be operated by DB Regio, as announced by the Ministry of Transport. In future, a train will run between Stockach and Radolfzell every half hour from Monday to Friday from 06:00 to 20:00. - According to the announcement, there will also be improvements between Karlsruhe and Germersheim. The previous express trains of the Stadtbahnen will be replaced by the S 3 of the Rhein-Neckar-S-Bahn. This will eliminate the need to change trains in Germersheim and create direct connections from Karlsruhe main station to Speyer and via the Palatinate to Mannheim. - From spring 2024, battery-electric trains will run on the Biberach (Baden) - Oberharmersbach - Riersbach line in Ortenau. They will then replace the existing diesel trains. "The electric trains leave a much smaller CO2 footprint." The new vehicles will expand the service in the evening and afternoon. After 9 p.m., individual buses will run every hour until midnight, the ministry added.

Construction work and staff shortages cause problems

The ongoing staff shortage is also causing deviations from the planned timetable: According to the announcement, the RE 73 will not be able to run between Karlsruhe and Heidelberg until the end of December 2023. There will also be changes to the timetable between Heidelberg and Neckartal due to staff shortages: Between 22:00 and 05:00, only buses will run on the S 1 and S 2 between Heidelberg and Eberbach and on the S 5 and S 51 between Heidelberg and Meckesheim. Trains will also only run every hour during the day.
