"Time" magazine names pop star Taylor Swift Personality of the Year 2023
Swift has succeeded in being "both the author and the heroine of her own story", Jacobs emphasized. In addition to her artistic and commercial success, much of what Swift has achieved this year cannot be measured. She is committed to giving value to the "dreams, feelings and experiences of people", especially women who feel "overlooked" and often "underestimated", explained the "Time" editor-in-chief.
Swift is one of the most successful female singers of recent decades. She became famous as a teenager with her own country songs, but finally switched to pop with her fifth album "1989". Swift has released more number one albums than any other female artist in the history of the US charts. Her film "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" grossed almost 93 million dollars (86 million euros) in its first weekend alone in October and is now the highest-grossing concert film of all time.
Her "Eras" world tour, which has long been sold out, will also take Swift to Germany in summer 2024. With more than 145 concerts, the tour will generate around 1.9 billion dollars according to analysts. To date, no artist has ever broken through the symbolic one billion dollar mark.
Swift's relationship with US football player Travis Kelce also dominated the headlines for weeks this year - and sparked many people's interest in American football for the first time: visits by the 33-year-old singer to her boyfriend's games caused TV ratings to skyrocket, and the two-time Super Bowl winner's jersey has become a huge sales hit.
Her fans, the Swifties, adore the singer of hits such as "Shake It Off" and "Cruel Summer". She is now even celebrated as a feminist icon. In one of her rare interviews, Swift told Time magazine that patriarchal society is mainly about money. The commercial success of female artists also means "that more female art is being created". She finds this "extremely encouraging".
The title "Person of the Year", which the New Yorker magazine has been awarding since 1927, is generally intended to highlight the weight and influence of a personality on the international stage, not necessarily just their popularity. Last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky received the award.
Previous winners include US President Joe Biden and his Vice President Kamala Harris, former Chancellor Angela Merkel, US civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. and Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.
