TikTok must comply with stricter EU regulations

The European Union classifies TikTok as a "gatekeeper." As a result, the video portal is subject to stricter rules for its users. The Chinese app contests the classification - and fails.

TikTok will have to submit to the stricter EU regulation for large online platforms in the future. The European Court of Justice dismissed a lawsuit by the Chinese short video app against this classification as a "gatekeeper."

Under this term, the EU groups together internet companies of a certain size, which then, under the Digital Markets Act, must fulfill certain obligations for the benefit of users. Besides TikTok, companies such as Alphabet (Google's parent company), Amazon, Apple, the booking platform Booking.com, Meta, and Microsoft fall under this category.

The companies are obliged to open up their platforms to competition and to take stronger action against hate and hate speech on the internet. The EU also aims to prevent the conglomerates from abusing their market power.

TikTok's future involves adhering to stricter EU regulations for large online platforms, as classified as a "gatekeeper". This categorization was upheld by the European Court of Justice, overruling TikTok's legal challenge. The Digital Markets Act mandates these internet conglomerates, including TikTok, Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Booking.com, Meta, and Microsoft, to promote competition and combat hate speech more effectively. The EU is concerned about the potential misuse of market power by these companies.
