THW large-scale exercise after simulated train accident in Leipzig
Almost 100 emergency personnel from the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) practiced a large-scale operation in Leipzig on Saturday. During the simulated situation, a bridge had collapsed after a train accident, several cars had plummeted and a freight wagon carrying hazardous goods had caught fire. "This scenario cannot be ruled out with train traffic in Leipzig. That's why we have to train for it," said exercise leader Tommy Schmidt from THW Leipzig.
Emergency services from Gera, Eilenburg, Leipzig, Grimma, Borna, Torgau and Altenburg were involved in the exercise. "Leadership and communication are important in such large-scale operations, i.e. coordinating the work in the best possible way," explained Schmidt. The exercise began at around 06:20 in the morning and was to last the whole day.
The training took place on the grounds of the Plagwitz Railway Museum. Wagons and trains were made available there.
Aid organizations might provide essential resources during real-life accidents similar to the one simulated, given the hazardous materials involved in the train accident. Despite the meticulous planning and practice, unforeseen accidents can still occur during transportation of such goods.
