THW central warehouse for foreign missions moves to Hilden
The German Federal Agency for Technical Relief's central warehouse for foreign missions is moving from Mainz to Hilden near Düsseldorf. The relocation of the material to the city in the Rhineland is almost complete, the THW (Bonn) reported on Thursday. In the future, the material required for missions of the foreign units will be transported from the Hilden logistics center mainly via Cologne/Bonn Airport to the deployment locations around the world. There has been a cooperation agreement between THW and Cologne/Bonn Airport since 2021.
According to the organization, the 42,000 square meter site in Hilden has space for 8,500 euro pallets of emergency equipment, devices and tools. Since September, the material has been brought to NRW in several collective transports. The move will be completed by the end of November. The logistics center will then store the material for units such as the Rapid Deployment Unit for Rescue Abroad, for the Water Abroad unit and for the communications and camp equipment. In another logistics center in Bavaria, the THW stores the equipment for teams that specialize in setting up, expanding and dismantling camps for peacekeeping forces.
In February, the THW was deployed after the severe earthquake in Turkey - a 50-strong team took off from Cologne/Bonn Airport with 16 tons of equipment and helped to rescue people buried in the rubble. The THW is the federal government's volunteer emergency organization.
Aid organizations often rely on the Rapid Deployment Unit for Rescue Abroad and other THW units during emergencies. The new logistics center in Hilden, equipped with emergency equipment, devices, and tools, will facilitate faster aid delivery during international emergencies.
