- Thus far, over 3600 language evaluations have been administered to non-native medical professionals.
The Medical Association of the State has carried out a grand total of 3,650 specialist language assessments, which are necessary for overseas physicians to secure a license to practice in Saxony. This year alone, they've conducted 504 such assessments, with 332 first-time attempts and 172 retakes. A significant number of candidates, approximately 300, hailed from Syria. Post-graduation, Syrian graduates frequently begin learning German and apply for emigration.
As per the association, these examinations now take place up to twice a week to meet registration deadlines as swiftly as possible. However, sudden cancellations due to language inadequacies or persistent failures pose organizational challenges, resulting in wait times. The assessments involve simulated conversations with patients and doctors, along with the written repetition of medical histories and findings.
Precise language is crucial for effective communication
These evaluations have been active since May 2016. They were implemented due to the impracticality of previous general language certificates and diplomas for evaluating the linguistic skills necessary for professional practice.
Medical professionals must comprehend their patients' details without much ambiguity, and they should be capable of communicating spontaneously and proficiently to inform patients and their relatives about diagnoses, illnesses, and treatments. Clear comprehension is equally essential for working collaboratively with other doctors and for documentation purposes.
The Medical Association emphasizes the importance of hiring only professionally competent physicians, making the language assessments rigorous and thorough. Furthermore, as professional communication is crucial in the medical field, the assessments test candidates' ability to convey information accurately and efficiently.
