Over South and East Thuringia, intense thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain showers took place on Saturday. Luckily, the region did not experience any major disasters in terms of weather, the operation center's spokesperson stated. Thankfully, no one was injured. Expecting more thunderstorms later on Saturday, the German Meteorological Service (DWD) issued an advisory for the Altenburger Land district, with anticipated precipitation of up to 25 liters per square meter per hour and gusts of 60 kilometers per hour.
The Downpour notably impacted the Greiz district. The rescue control center in Gera shared that streets and fields were flooded. Frequently, the fire department was called upon to empty submerged cellars. In Liebschwitz, a small stream spilled over its banks. The surrounding area of Ronneburg was hit the hardest.
Thunderstorms are forecasted to prevail in East Thuringia according to the DWD throughout the night on Sunday, following which they are likely to move southwards by midnight. The lows are predicted to dip between 13-15 degrees Celsius.
