Thuringian Workers are Making Progress in Wage and Salary Equality

In the past year, salaries in dwellings and social care sectors experienced the most significant increase in Thuringia. Geographically speaking, Jena emerged as the location with the highest typical compensation.

In Thuringia, the median income climbed up once more in 2023, yet it still lags significantly behind the country-wide average. The central figure for all full-time employees subject to social security contributions was €3,109 in 2023, marked by an enhancement of €164 or 5.6%, when compared to the previous year, as per the regional office of the Federal Employment Agency. On a nationwide scale, the median income hit €3,796 in December 2023, marking a yearly surge of 4%.

The sectors of care and social services witnessed the most substantial growth in gross wages in Thuringia. The median wage in this sector stood at €3,268 in December 2022, and soared to €3,556 the next year, signifying an almost 9% increase. The hospitality industry also recorded a 9% surge.

Women tend to earn less than men on average. In December 2023, their median wage stood at €3,060, compared to €3,128 for men. The prevalence of industrial jobs in Thuringia is cited as the reason for this disparity. Nevertheless, women outperformed men in terms of yearly growth in gross monthly wages, with a rate of 6.32% versus 5.28% for men.

Thuringia delivers higher salaries to city dwellers as opposed to rural residents. The most substantial median gross monthly wage is found in Jena, reaching €3,875. Weimar follows closely with €3,443, while Erfurt takes the third position with €3,356. The least remunerative wages can be found in the Saale-Orla district, boasting a median gross monthly wage of €2,831.

As per the employment agency, dental practitioners and physicians command the highest median gross wage in Thuringia, amounting to €7,038 in December 2023. University employees came in second place with €5,208, while the accompaniment of personal care occupations, such as hairdressers and beauticians, occupies the bottom rung with a median gross wage of €1,906.

The following data reveals that women, on average, earn less than men in Thuringia. However, they outperformed men in terms of yearly growth in gross monthly wages.
