Penal system - Thuringian state parliament discusses prison construction in Zwickau

Significantly more expensive and still not finished: the Thuringian state parliament will be discussing the construction of a joint prison for Thuringia and Saxony on Wednesday (start of session: 2 p.m.). The FDP parliamentary group will discuss delays and cost increases at the planned Zwickau prison in a topical debate. "The never-ending series of bankruptcies, misfortunes and breakdowns poses growing challenges for the prison system in Thuringia," said FDP MP Dirk Bergner, explaining the topic. This involves issues such as long-term personnel planning or prison conditions.

The planned new prison in Zwickau will have space for up to 820 prisoners - 450 from Saxony and 370 from Thuringia. It is intended to replace several other prisons. The two federal states signed a state treaty for the project in 2014. However, over time, the costs have more than doubled from 150 million euros and an opening date originally planned for 2019 has been postponed to 2025. It was recently announced that a new general planner is to get the project under control. Legal action is to be taken against the previous general planner.
