Thuringian households particularly affected by power cuts

An episode of Simpsons or a third of an ice hockey game lasts around 20 minutes. That's almost how long Thuringian households were without electricity on average last year. Whether that is a lot or a little depends on how you look at it.

Energy - Thuringian households particularly affected by power cuts

Last year, households in Thuringia were without power for longer than almost anywhere else in Germany. On average, it remained dark for just under 18 minutes, according to figures from the Federal Network Agency. This was only the case more frequently in Brandenburg with 19 minutes. The national average of unplanned power outages per household was 12 minutes.

Possible reasons for this could include the location of the Free State with its many wooded areas, as a spokesperson for Thuringia Energy Networks (TEN) explained. Medium-voltage lines, which were particularly badly affected in Thuringia, are often at tree height and therefore vulnerable. In addition, there were individual weather extremes. The high level of construction activity in the course of the fiber optic expansion could also have caused power outages.

TEN operates around 34,000 kilometers of electricity grids in Thuringia and is the largest grid operator in the state. It also operates the grids of individual municipal utilities.

Number well below other European countries

In a Europe-wide comparison, the figures for Thuringia and Germany are low, as a look at figures from the association of national regulatory authorities, CEER, shows. According to these figures, Germany and Switzerland were the best performing countries in 2018 with just under 14 outage minutes. At around 12 minutes, Thuringia was even below the national average. In France, on the other hand, it was 51 minutes, in Kosovo even 3940 minutes.

  1. Despite the frequent power cuts, Thuringian households continue to rely heavily on electricity for their daily needs, such as lighting and powering household appliances.
  2. The Federal Network Agency is currently investigating the root causes of the power failure incidents in Thuringia and Brandenburg, including the impact of construction activities related to fiber optic expansion.
  3. The power outages in Thuringia and Germany are significantly lower than those in many other European countries, according to CEER figures, with Switzerland and Germany having the lowest figures at around 14 minutes in 2018.
  4. In an effort to improve energy reliability and reduce power failures, TEN in Thuringia is working on upgrading its electricity grids and collaborating with local municipal utilities to enhance grid resilience in vulnerable areas.
