Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht - Thuringian BSW will focus on peace theme in government
If the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance participates in a state government, it will hold firm on its positions regarding war and peace. "Peace is one of our core themes and our brand identity," said BSW co-chair Steffen Schütz of the German Press Agency in Erfurt. One should stand by one's ideals. "If we sacrifice that on the altar of political business, then we don't deserve to be re-elected," he said.
The BSW demands more diplomatic efforts for a possible peace solution in the Ukraine war. According to Schütz, this is also the top issue in the campaign for the young party.
Thuringia's AfD spokesperson Björn Höcke recently criticized the new political competition and said that as soon as the BSW enters a coalition, it would "be humming the tune of war mongers." The Thuringian AfD is classified as reliably right-wing extremist by the state constitution protection and is monitored.
Initiatives in the Federal Council
The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance is currently polling at 20-21% in the latest surveys for the Thuringia state election on September 1st and is in third place, just behind the CDU. If the BSW overtakes the Christians, it intends to nominate the former mayor of Eisenach, Katja Kipp, as Minister-President.
Schütz confirmed that his party intends to bring the topic of war and peace onto the political agenda through Bundesrat initiatives if it assumes government responsibility. He conceded that there could be a conflict field with potential coalition partners such as the SPD or the CDU. However, no exploratory talks are currently taking place, but rather an attempt is being made to win voters in the campaign.
