Rail traffic - Thuringia wants to improve local rail transport

Transport Minister Susanna Karawanskij (Left Party) wants attractive prices for local public transport in Thuringia and a doubling of passenger numbers by 2030, she announced on Tuesday in Erfurt at the presentation of a concept for the expansion of local rail transport. It is about "climate protection with social responsibility". Many people are currently complaining that their homes are not easily accessible by bus and train.

The "rail infrastructure master plan" should provide the framework for improvements. However, more money would have to be allocated to this in the state budget in the coming years, according to the Minister. Transport is responsible for a quarter of all CO2 emissions.

According to the Ministry of Transport, Thuringia has a dense railroad network with 1,600 kilometers of track, but this is electrified at a below-average level compared to the rest of Germany, which is hindering the decarbonization of rail transport. An expert report proposes the reactivation of eight railroad lines that are no longer in use.

Susanna Karawanskij suggested improving local rail transport in Thuringia, particularly focusing on electrifying the Railroad network, which is currently below average compared to the rest of Germany. This initiative aims to increase passenger numbers by 2030 and make local public transport more affordable in Thuringia's cities, like Erfurt. The reactivation of eight dormant railroad lines, proposed in an expert report, could significantly contribute to decarbonizing rail traffic in the region.
