After heavy rainfall in the south and southwest on Wednesday, unsettled weather is spreading across Germany: According to the German Weather Service (DWD), there are expected to be strong thunderstorms with severe potential in many parts of the country on Thursday. The DWD reported that, with the exception of the west and northeast, nearly nationwide strong thunderstorms are possible. Already on Wednesday, some regions in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria were affected by heavy rainfall.

Thunderstorm front spares only a few regions

On Thursday morning, there will initially only be scattered thunderstorms, with local heavy rain of up to 25 liters per square meter, and in some cases even 30. With stronger thunderstorms, there is also the possibility of gusty winds and small hail.

According to the DWD, in addition to the west and northeast, nearly nationwide strong thunderstorms are possible in the course of the day. In some areas, there is a possibility of heavy rain with amounts exceeding 30 liters per square meter. Locally, there is a possibility of extreme rainfall of over 40 liters per square meter in a short time or over 60 liters per square meter in several hours.

In the night to Friday, there are expected to be strong thunderstorms with heavy rain, initially also small hail and gusty winds in the north and northeast.
