During the night from Saturday to Sunday, heavy thunderstorms with hail and strong winds hit wide parts of Germany. In the western and southwestern regions, heavy rainfall and hailstones fell from the sky. The wind blew with speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour (almost hurricane force, 103 km/h), according to the German Weather Service (DWD).

On Sunday morning, the DWD lifted all existing thunderstorm warnings in Germany for severe thunderstorms. However, meteorologists continued to warn of strong thunderstorms in northern and eastern Germany. In the northeastern part of Germany, individual severe thunderstorms with heavy rain could not be ruled out before mid-morning, they said.

Football fans had to be strong

The Achtelfinal match of the Football European Championship between Germany and Denmark in Dortmund was interrupted by the thunderstorm on Saturday evening. Lightning bolts were visible above the stadium, hail and heavy rain fell on the pitch. Large puddles formed on the front rows of the spectator stands. After a forced break of approximately 25 minutes, the game continued.

The public viewing events in Dortmund were cancelled early due to the storm. The reason given was the danger to the fans. In Frankfurt am Main, the fan mile had already been closed beforehand.

In Oberhausen, a lightning strike hit the roof of a house and caused a fire. The fire was extinguished, but the residents could not return to their homes yet, according to the fire department.

Various events cancelled due to the rain

The SWR3 Rheinland-Pfalz Open Air concert in Mainz had to be cancelled in the evening due to the rain. Around 10,000 people had come to the event site at the Große Bleiche in Mainz before it was cancelled. In and around the city, as well as in Wiesbaden and the Saarland, the fire department had to respond more frequently due to the rain. Major damage was not reported initially.

Rare weather event

"Even if it rains heavily: A so-called heavy thunderstorm situation like this night only occurs 'one to two times a year in Germany,' according to a meteorologist from DWD." The storm moved northeastward over the night.

In the most affected areas, the DWD expected up to 40 liters of rainwater per square meter in a short time, and even up to 50 to 80 liters in a few hours.
