Thunderstorms and heavy rain cause flooding

A storm in Hamburg caused streets to flood and cellars, stores and underground car parks to fill up. The eastern part of the city was mainly affected on Thursday, particularly the districts of Barmbek, Winterhude, Wandsbek, Lohbrügge and Bergedorf, according to the fire department.

Fire department operations - Thunderstorms and heavy rain cause flooding

Through the storm, additionally many trees were uprooted. In Barmbek-South, part of the roof of a multi-family house was covered. The Hamburg Fire Department was reportedly active at numerous interventions.

On Thursday afternoon, as announced, there was heavy rain and thunderstorms with strong lightnings and thunders over the city. The Fire Department counted over 700 weather-related interventions between the afternoon and early evening. There were still some interventions running late in the evening, which were being worked on.

In the midst of the storm, a tree fell onto an underground car park in Lohbrügge, causing minor damage. The weather in Bergedorf also took a turn for the worse, leading to flooding in some areas. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the Fire Department continued its operations in Winterhude, dealing with various incidents. Unfortunately, the thunderstorm also caused a fire in an underground car park in Wandsbek, requiring the prompt attention of the Fire Department. On this stormy day, the Hamburg Fire Department had a particularly busy PM (Präsenzmelde).
