- Three trucks and a camper burn on A2: one person killed
In a severe accident on the A2 involving multiple trucks and a motorhome, one person was killed. According to the highway police, a Polish truck driver failed to notice the tail end of a traffic jam at a construction site and collided at full speed with a motorhome, pushing it into the trucks ahead. All three trucks and the motorhome then caught fire.
One occupant of the motorhome died at the scene, while another was severely injured and airlifted to a hospital. The truck driver was also severely injured, while the drivers of the other two trucks sustained minor injuries.
The accident occurred on Tuesday morning on the A2 heading towards Hannover, just past the Böde-Nord rest area. Both directions had to be closed for firefighting operations. The police expect the Berlin-bound direction to be reopened later in the afternoon once the fires are extinguished. The closure in the direction of Hannover is likely to continue into the evening.
Only after the cleanup is complete will the responsible highway maintenance department be able to assess any damage to the road surface from the fire and determine if repairs are necessary.
The accident site was located near The Hanover, as indicated by the closure of the A2 heading towards the city. The injured occupant of the motorhome was transported to a hospital in The Hanover for treatment.
