DFB Cup - Three second division teams and Gladbach in the cup quarter-finals

Borussia Mönchengladbach have reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup thanks to a last-minute goal. The first-division soccer team celebrated Manu Koné's goal in the 120th minute to secure a 1:0 (0:0) win against VfL Wolfsburg.

Second-division leaders St. Pauli won 4:1 (1:1) at regional league side FC 08 Homburg in a much more convincing fashion. 1. FC Kaiserslautern also advanced to the next round thanks to a 2:0 (0:0) win against 1. FC Nürnberg and Fortuna Düsseldorf with a 2:1 (0:1) win at 1. FC Magdeburg.

The Bundesliga clubs Gladbach and Wolfsburg played an appallingly weak game for long stretches - but at least Gladbach were able to celebrate in the end. Substitute Koné scored the winner at the very last second.

St. Pauli win in Homburg

Things went much better for St. Pauli. Hauke Wahl (24'), Elias Saad (64'), Marcel Hartel (69') and Johannes Eggestein (73') scored for the Hamburg side in Homburg, who only had a few problems with their opponents shortly before and after the break. Markus Mendler (28) had equalized for the underdogs.

Prior to that, second division rivals Lautern had already prevailed. In the first game under new coach Dimitrios Grammozis, Richmond Tachie (75) and Ragnar Ache (78) scored the goals in front of 48,349 spectators at the Fritz Walter Stadium. Kaiserslautern have thus reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup for the first time in ten years.

Fortuna, on the other hand, had a little more difficulty than St. Pauli and the Palatinate. It was only thanks to a late brace from Jona Niemiec that they won in Magdeburg. The substitute striker turned the game around, scoring in the 87th minute and in the third minute of stoppage time. Baris Atik (15) had previously put the hosts ahead in front of 20,090 spectators. This is Fortuna's first quarter-final appearance since the 2019/2020 season.
