Research - Three scientists from Hesse receive Leibniz Prize

Three researchers from Hesse and seven other scientists will be awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize 2024. The prize is endowed with 2.5 million euros each and is considered the most important research funding prize in Germany. The award winners can use the prize money for up to seven years for their own research, as announced by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in Bonn on Thursday.

The three prizewinners from Hesse:

- Tobias Erb is Professor of Synthetic Microbiology at the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology and at the University of Marburg. Among other things, he is working on the question of how plants can bind even more carbon dioxide using certain enzymes, "a topic of great social relevance", as the award says.

- Moritz Helmstaedter is Professor of Neuroscience at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt. Among other things, he conducts research into the basic principles of brain organization. His work has enabled him to answer questions about the fundamental differences between the human brain and the brains of other mammalian species.

- Peter Schreiner is Professor of Organic Molecular Chemistry at the University of Giessen. Schreiner works intensively in the field where organic, physical and theoretical chemistry overlap. His findings have far-reaching significance for the synthesis of new materials, for example.

The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Berlin on March 13. A total of 150 proposals were submitted this time.
