Three people lost their lives and numerous others got trapped following a building collapse in South Africa.
Twenty-four individuals were saved from the crash site and transferred to hospitals, as noted in a statement issued by the city of George on Tuesday. Fifty-one people were still caught in the rubble, per a different statement released by George's city hall. Western Cape's premier, Alan Winde, disclosed earlier that there were 75 individuals from the construction crew present on the site at the time of the incident. CCTV footage viewed by Reuters showed a thick cloud of dust as the edifice crumbled during the afternoon of Monday. A local council member, Theresa Jeyi, relayed details to reporters, "I saw one guy working, and then 'boom', the entire building crumbled... I'm also shaken up. It's quite painful." Police and rescue units with tracking dogs in tow arrived on the scene, the provincial government revealed. According to George's mayor Leon van Wyk, rescue workers were attempting to locate the locations where they heard screams, but equipment was on its way. The mayor added, "This is going to be an extended activity that could continue all night long."
