Three insights from Hertha's draw against Karlsruhe
Hertha are not getting anywhere in the second division. After the 2:2 draw against Karlsruher SC, the team remains in twelfth place. Three lessons learned from the second draw in a row.
Lack of consistency: Hertha completely missed the opening phase. "I had to turn on the players from the side and insult them, because that wasn't right," said Dardai. Things then got better before losing focus again in the second half. "We became a bit too passive again at times," said goalkeeper Tjark Ernst.
You can rely on Fabian Reese - but he alone is not enough: The 25-year-old was again involved in almost all of his team's dangerous moves against KSC. Time and again, he kept several Karlsruhe defenders busy on his own. "He's very hard-working and has a good mentality. He has great body language," praised coach Dardai on Sport1. But the winger needs more support. "Basically, more players need to reach their level, more players need to create danger," he said. "If you have two or three men on you, there are overpaying situations somewhere. We have to become more variable."
There is one gap that cannot be filled: However, there is currently a lack of players for more creativity. "We started the season with good ball circulation, with good build-up play," said Dardai. "To do that, you need players who can occupy the half-spaces with their backs to goal, turn and make the play." But exactly these types of players are not available. Ibo Maza, Palko Dardai and Jeremy Dudziak are missing through injury.
Despite the draw, Hertha BSC still struggle in Bundesliga 2, sitting in twelfth place. In the match against Karlsruhe SC, Fabian Reese was once again a standout performer, causing issues for Karlsruhe's defenders, but the team lacked consistency and creativity, with key players injured.
