Three individuals succumbed to gunfire in a school incident in the western region of Bosnia.
At 10:15 AM, authorities received word that a man began firing an automatic weapon at a school. According to Adnan Beganovic, spokesperson for Una-sana canton, the incident left the school dean, the secretary, and a teacher dead. The shooter then attempted suicide, resulting in severe injuries.
Beganovic reported that the suspect was transported to Banja Luka for urgent medical attention. An investigation is currently underway.
Due to the school being still closed from its summer break, no children were harmed in the incident.
As per N1 TV's sources, a janitor with previous disputes with the school administration and currently under disciplinary action, intentionally targeted and killed specific individuals. However, Reuters was unable to confirm this info at the time.
Incidents like this mass shooting are relatively uncommon in the Western Balkans region, which is still holding on to the weapons that circulated during the conflicts of the 1990s.
Upon reviewing recent events, a war veteran in the adjacent country of Croatia wounded six other individuals and killed five, including his mother, in a nursing home shooting just last July.
Please note that this situation is still evolving and will be updated as necessary.
The shooter's actions have sparked international concern, with many expressing sympathy and offering support from Europe and around the world. Despite being an unusual occurrence in the Western Balkans region, it serves as a sobering reminder of the region's lingering guns issue, originating from the conflicts of the 1990s.
