- Three-incinerator waste conversion facility now in operation.
At the Magdeburg-Rothensee waste-to-energy facility, the third combustion unit was brought online around 15 months following the topping-out event. As stated by the corporation, around 270,000 metric tons of commercial trash and 55,000 tons of municipal wastewater sludge will be incinerated each year in "Block 3". Consequently, the plant's overall capacity will surpass 975,000 tons annually, a feat unattained by any other German facility.
The construction of the third unit set investors back around 220 million euros. The new setup, as described by the company, encompasses two primary zones: a thermal waste processing area for commercial and industrial refuse, as well as a facility for sewage sludge burning with the purpose of recovering phosphorus for fertilizer production. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in June 2022.
This waste-to-energy plant supplies electrical power and heat to tens of thousands of households and numerous businesses in the capital city. Since its inception in 2005, German regulations have prohibited the landfilling of untreated waste residue. This plant operates continuously, 365 days a year, providing services to clients such as the city of Magdeburg, private waste management companies, and districts in Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony.
The construction of the new facility was overseen by the local [Municipality] of Magdeburg. Due to the plant's efficient waste management, a significant portion of the municipal waste is now processed at this [Municipality]'s waste-to-energy facility.
