Accident - Three dead on A38 after fleeing police checkpoint

In the dark of night in Saxony-Anhalt, a 57-year-old man fled from a police checkpoint and ended up killing two women as a wrong-way driver. He had sped off in his car through several districts. He collided head-on with the women's car on the Autobahn 38 between Querfurt and Eisleben at around 4.25 am. All three died at the scene of the accident. Another man who was in the women's car was flown to a hospital in Halle with serious injuries.

The pictures from the scene of the accident show what forces must have been at work: What remained were two badly demolished, almost smashed car wrecks that had to be towed away. Rescue workers opened the roof of one of the wrecked cars to get the occupants out. Jackets were still on the seats. Company lettering can be seen on the bodywork. There is an e-bike in the trunk of the wrong-way driver's car.

What had happened? Officers wanted to check the later wrong-way driver in the Staßfurt area early on Friday morning. Police spokespeople did not say what exactly caused the incident. The investigation was ongoing. The 57-year-old is said to have evaded the check and sped off. His route led via the A14 towards Halle, through the western Saale district to the A38, where he drove in the wrong direction.

"Police forces were behind the vehicle in the sense of a pursuit, I can't say how close or how close," said police spokeswoman Antje Hoppen. Various police forces are said to have been notified during the journey through several districts. How many were actually involved in the pursuit also remains to be determined. The police spokeswoman said that it would be difficult to find out what caused the 57-year-old to drive onto the A38 in the wrong direction.

The oncoming car with the three occupants probably had little opportunity to react. Distances are difficult to estimate in the dark. Police spokeswoman Hoppen spoke of a particularly tragic incident - precisely because two bystanders, who according to current knowledge had done nothing wrong, had been torn from their lives.

The A38 towards Göttingen initially remained closed for the accident investigation and the recovery and cleaning work. Road users should take a wide detour around the accident area.
