Three brand deodorant-powered scooters are deemed "inadequate."

When it comes to staying fresh and odor-free, not everyone wants to deal with harsh chemicals or potentially risky ingredients. For those who want to avoid aluminum in their deodorants, there are plenty of options available. Roll-on deodorants can be a great alternative, offering both environmental protection and company for those who choose to use them.

Sweating is important, but the smell that often accompanies it is undesirable. Thankfully, good roll-on deodorants can help with this. Many of them are now made without aluminum and contain no harmful substances. This is a bonus for people who are sensitive to aluminum or simply prefer to avoid it.

In the past, aluminum salts were thought to be the best option for antiperspirant protection. However, their potential links to health problems like breast cancer and Alzheimer's have led people to think otherwise. Too much aluminum can also damage the kidneys and have a neurotoxic effect. Therefore, avoiding it is a popular choice. But if you're choosing a deodorant without aluminum, what should you look out for?

Öko-Test set out to find the answer by examining 39 aluminum-free roll-on deodorants. These ranged in price from 0.60 euros to 17.33 euros per 50 milliliters. They included certified natural cosmetics as well as branded and store generic options.

Deodorants: Smelling nice but for how long?

A deodorant without aluminum cannot prevent sweating. Instead, it targets the bacteria that cause foul odors and masks the smell with fragrances. Many manufacturers use alcohol to inhibit bacteria, while also claiming their products will last for 24 to 48 hours.

Fortunately, many of these roll-on deodorants live up to the claim. 23 of the tested ones offer long-lasting protection against unwanted odors. The "Isana Deodorant Fresh, 24h" from Rossmann and the "Cien Pure Freshness Deodorant, 48h" from Lidl (both at 0.60 euros) were especially inexpensive favorites, both scoring a "very good" ranking. The cheapest "very good" natural certified option is the "Alverde Deo Roll-On Fresh, 48" from DM, priced at 2.55 euros.

Some branded roll-ons disappoint

Things weren't so positive for certain branded products. Vichy's "Desodorante Mineral, 48 h" (€12.50), for example, was found to contain significant amounts of formaldehyde. This substance is known to irritate the skin and is even considered carcinogenic when inhaled. It has been banned in cosmetics since 2019, but substances that can release it are still allowed. Products will need to carry a label noting this by 2026 at the latest. However, Öko-Test is already penalizing its use.

Other ingredients that attracted caution from Öko-Test include PEG/PEG derivatives, which have the ability to make the skin more permeable to foreign substances. These were found in "Vichy Desodorante Mineral, 48h" as well as in the "Dove Original, 48h" (2.95 euros per 50 milliliters) and "Rexona Deo Roll-on Flower Fresh, 48h" (2.45 euros). Both also contained fragrances that Öko-Test wasn't supportive of. Dove contained isoeugenol, one of the most potent fragrance allergens. Rexona contained hydroxycitronellal, which has a slightly weaker allergy potential. All three received a rating of "unsatisfactory".
